A little detour off the island
Every so often we build a tool instead of a level. This is a first, deliberately vague hello to one of them.
Quick one, and it's not about the game. Building Islands of the Blessed means spending a lot of time inside Unreal's Blueprint graphs — and somewhere in there we started doing the very developer thing of building a tool to make that nicer. It grew. It now has a name. So we figured we'd say hello, even if we're going to be a bit coy about the details for now.
Why a tool, of all things
We've mentioned before that we prototype the game's systems in Blueprint first, prove they're fun, then tidy them up and move the heavy parts to C++. That first stretch — sketching logic, rearranging it, getting it out of your head and into a graph — is where we kept wishing for something a little faster and a little calmer than clicking around the editor at 1 a.m.
So we started building it. Not a grand plan, just scratching our own itch, one evening at a time — which, if you've read the other devlogs, is apparently how everything here starts.
Blueprint Lab.
A quiet place to think in Blueprints —
and hand them back to the engine.
What it is (for now)
That's about as much as we'll say today: it's a place to lay out Unreal Blueprint graphs, move them around, and send them on their way. The picture up top is the most honest description we can give without spoiling the fun — nodes, wires, a dark grid, the usual.
There's more to it, and there's a story in how it works that we'll tell properly another time. For now we're happy to leave it a little mysterious.
Where it's going
It's quietly becoming its own little corner of the studio — a workshop next door to the game, with maybe a couple of siblings down the line. When it's ready to show properly, this is where you'll hear about it first.
That's the detour. Back to the island next time.
More devlogs
Curious already?
We'll lift the curtain on Blueprint Lab when it's ready. If "a tool for wrangling Unreal Blueprints" makes your ears prick up, the Discord is where the first peeks will land.
